Join me for a 4 day watercolour workshop on beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada! The theme of this workshop is “brave, spontaneous landscapes in watercolour” and it’s going to be an adventure as we explore principles that will help you free your authentic personal style and paint boldly from your heart. We’ll be using both studio and plein air painting to develop a focus on process and heart-prioritizing self-expression.
Because our focus will be on personal style development, brand new painters might find this workshop overwhelming as they work to learn watercolour technique. Knowledge of watercolour technique is an asset in moving on toward developing an artist’s personal style.
Workshop Details:
Date: August 17-20, 2024, 9am - 4 pm daily
Location: McTavish Academy of Art, North Saanich, British Columbia Canada (about 45 minutes north of Victoria)
Itinerary:
Day 1: Studio painting/introduction to process at McTavish Academy
Day 2: Morning, studio painting. Afternoon, weather permitting we will be painting either on campus at McTavish Academy or on the beach in Sidney.
Day 3: Day trip to Victoria. Our private shuttle bus will pick us up at 9am and we will spend the day painting in one or two beautiful locations around Victoria. A visit to Opus Art Supplies might be a possibility to arrange, and artists can choose one of the waterfront restaurants for lunch.
Day 4: Final day, studio painting at McTavish. We’ll use our sketches from the day before to develop paintings in the studio.

Getting here:
McTavish Academy & Sidney BC are only minutes from the Victoria Airport. My experience has been that if you’re flying, flying into Victoria airport is the best option in terms of time spent traveling and cost, rather flying to Vancouver and trying to catch a ferry or floatplane.
If you’re driving, you can take the Tsawwassen Ferry from Vancouver, the Coho Washington Ferry from Port Angeles, into Victoria or Swartz Bay, which is the ferry terminal closest to Sidney.
Once you arrive in Sidney, the suggested hotels are about 4km from the McTavish Art Academy and accessible by bus or taxi. You may enjoy renting a car so you can take a few extra days to explore Victoria and beautiful Vancouver Island. If booking an Airbnb or similar vacation rental, please plan to arrange a car rental as public transit in the Sidney/North Saanich area might be complex to arrange for some of the more rural Airbnb options.
